OneRobot NFT Artist Interview | NFT Culture | NFT and crypto art Interviews and more
I am 40 years old and started making my first digital art in 1999. For my heritage, let’s just say I’m a citizen of the world. I grew up partly in London, UK, then moved to Southeast Asia for a few years much later and finally settled in Germany in 2015.
Can you tell us about your background and what led you to become an artist and finally experiment with NFTs?
Starting at the age of 10 I became computer savvy by messing with the basics on a ZX spectrum, then at the age of 15 I had my first 486 PCs, then I went to university to study banking data security. I’ve romanticized hackers, crackers, freakers, and all those “dark sides of the net”: BBS, Fido, and finally the Internet. So I decided to create a website for cyberpunk subculture and that’s how I discovered Photoshop (later I found out that it has layers). My first website design was pretty awesome which was guided by some kind spirit on the internet but they provide some references to what the “good” design should look like. That’s how I discovered SurfStation, Caliber 10K, Thrioh, Pixelsurgeon, Design is Kinky, Australian Infront and many more. These were the pioneers of exposure to the most talented digital artists of the time (around 2000). I was very inspired by that visual content and soon started creating art for art which led me to leave my university and start working as a web and then flash designer, remember Macromedia? As much as the flash was cool I got it rather limited and started my first experiment with 3D and After Effects which helped me get my first job as a motion designer at MTV. Since then I have worked for a few more TV channels, established a pretty successful freelance business, moved to Germany, started working for Sky TV Channel as a Senior Motion Designer / 3D Generalist. My friends called me in February 2021
About NFT at the time I was mainly making music in my spare time and thought I’d let it go and come up with an idea for my first NFT series. So far I am a full-time NFT artist, I no longer experiment with NFT, I am a true believer.
When did you first mint your NFT? Which platform did you choose and why?
My Genesis was minted on March 3, 2021, it was a multi-version that I dropped to Rarible. I didn’t really like OpenSea’s UI so I was looking for a popular non-curated option. My early investors were chasing me and I was sold out in a matter of minutes. Little did I know that this journey would require my full commitment and dedication.
Can you tell us one thing you can’t live without? (And why)
Being a robot, I can’t live without the work I want to do. Complete my work or even define my life. It’s hard for me to sit and do nothing as well as enjoy “free time”. It’s probably not good for my mental health but “I produce and so am I”.
Who is your favorite artist (s) (NFT)? What resonates with you about their style?
Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by the work of Arkhip Quindzhi. I’ll spend a lot of time looking at “Moonlight Night on the Diaper”. The implementation of light and color in that painting is wonderful. I like expressionism so I must mention Paul Klee, August Mackay and Franz Mark. Why their work resonates with me: it is bold in color and shape, as vivid as it is, it denies realism.
Claude Monet from the Impressionist crew is certainly one of my weaknesses, his “Sunrise” and “San Giorgio Maggiore et Dusk” enchant me to say the least. Staying on Impressionism, I recently discovered Olga’s work
Novokhatska, a contemporary French artist, and was instantly blown away by his style and technique.
Who is your favorite NFT artist? What makes this artist unique?
This is a very difficult question and it is almost impossible for me to separate one and if I can answer with a list, I am sure I will miss someone. I believe that all artists who are true to their call and craft are unique. Also to start answering this question I need to set the criteria of “favorite”: yes
Is it art, is it personality or both? I will just say that on my journey I have met some incredible people and they are all my favorites
What compelled you to follow the NFT industry?
I’m sure every artist needs an audience and legitimacy, be it in the form of praise or financial rewards. NFT Space provides an amazing community of people connecting at different levels along with all of that. This is the best thing that has happened to me in the last 7 years. Needless to say, I also got addicted to art collection.
What is a part of the NFT industry that you bought but want to miss?
Deslucres https://twitter.com/DesLucrece
Enough sa (i) d
If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go? Why this location?
Portugal. The best food. Never. And I like food.
What are your other passions besides art? Why?
Do you create other forms of art?
My other passion is music. I’m an avid listener of a variety of genres from jazz to leftfield electronics. And I also make music: orchestral arrangements and liquid / intelligent drums and bass. Not doing much of this lately because I’m focusing on 220% NFT space.
How do you come up with your specific style?
My professional activities have made landing in a certain style challenging. Due to the nature of my work I can work in a wide range of strategies and directions and provide a quality product. But I knew it was time for me to choose. Just before starting in the NFT space I was making a self-directed short film that would have been a tribute to the sci-fi b-movies of the 50s and 60s, so my first series was called Retro-Future and featured UFO, Space Monster. And robots. I later experimented with glitch and abstract art until at one point I decided to combine systematic / productive graphics with human form. After doing some “human experiments” I decided to combine two things that fascinated me and that is African tribal culture and hi-tech / cyberpunk. Speaking of the latter, I wanted to come up with a new direction and give it a somewhat luxurious feel in contrast to the grungee just bundle and the worn metal so I blended it with the elements of fashion and jewelry. This aspect was very well received and more importantly I really enjoy creating art in this style which I call “cyber-influenced chic fused with aphrodisiacism and conceptual fashion”.
How has your style evolved over the years?
As I mentioned above, I’ve worked in different styles all my life and the main change happened a few months ago when I settled into the “cyber-African-chic” direction.
What is coming in the near future?
If we talk in the general context of NFTs and Crypto, I can see that it is being widely adopted in the next 5 years or so. We will transform the Wild West into a well-oiled economic model. However, I don’t see “real” decentralization happening anytime soon and it wants to keep the chaotic elements of human nature and governments in control but I hope that some kind of agreement will be reached with some rules and regulations. That we will agree to comply. There is no chance of shutting down the blockchain anyway and we are running big time on this wave.
If you could collaborate with an artist, who would it be?
I would say it’s Natalie Shaw: https://twitter.com/NatalieShau
I have become a huge fan of her work and especially the Bad Girls Club series.
Do you have any upcoming drops?
Yes, at the moment I am working on 3 more pieces for the Robot Collection (ETH) of my age and another part that will be sent to some of my collectors. I am creating an idea to plan more TEZ pieces for the ongoing series in Solana as well as a collection of tribal interfaces. The goal is to establish a strong presence in three blockchains: ETH, XTZ and SOL. There are a few more things planned but I’m not ready to reveal them yet
