Giovanni De Benedetto NFT Artist Interview | NFT Culture | NFT and crypto art Interviews and more
I am a self-taught visual artist from Udine, Italy.
After earning a diploma in music performance at the Bologna Music Academy, I moved to Berlin, where I spent the first three of seven years studying catalyst music (an academy affiliated with St. Mark’s and St. John’s University in Plymouth). , Bachelor of Arts honors in electronic music production.
Can you tell us about your background and what led you to become an artist and finally experiment with NFTs?
Since 2009, even before studying music professionally, I have begun to create a creative / unveiling process based on action painting, digital photography and post-production with what I call augmented calligraphy paintings (AKPs). PREMATURE is a project that encompasses all AKPs, pushing the boundaries of the creative potential of the ink blot industry, where the aesthetic power of the artist’s original images is enhanced through digital photography. Clexography is the technique of making images, starting with the inkblot, which was introduced by Justinus Corner in the second half of the 19th century and was followed by the famous psychoanalyst Hermann Rorschach. The combination of clichোগgraphy and photography creates a result that immortalizes the freshness of each painting and enhances its detail.
Here, the original painting serves only as a matrix enhanced by digital photography, whose digital file is envisioned as the ultimate part of the art, which can be printed on fine art paper in wide print or blockchain.
I am driven by the desire to make my work known to the world because of its uniqueness in the way it is perceived and its visible results. Moreover, I want to see where this process takes us, both in terms of aesthetics but also socially, with different people sharing perspectives, taking multiple perspectives at the same time.
When did you first mint your NFT? Which platform did you choose and why?
I did my first NFT Mint on June 21 at the Foundation. I chose the foundation because I liked the kind of work that was done there at the time, and the kind of collector that was on the platform.
Can you tell us one thing you can’t live without? (And why)
Music because it’s a kind of art that resonates with the body physically and because of this, it can open up a kind of deep realization that I greatly appreciate.
This means that I easily feel cold listening to music and it can take me to “other places”, where I feel warmth in my gut when I look at a beautiful piece of art. Both are strong emotions, but the first one is much more impressive to me because At the same time different senses and states of consciousness are involved.
Who is your favorite artist (s) (NFT)? What resonates with you about their style
Hard question to answer but I picked one of the best exhibits I visited last year as a reference. So, I am talking about Gottfried Helenwin because of his use of hyper-realistic painting technique and reading many levels of his work.
His work raises far more questions than answers, and to me it is the best “utility” for the industry.
Who is your favorite NFT artist? What makes this artist unique?
Another tough question, but I can say Jesse Draxler. I love to realize his vision through his art, he deconstructs and reassembles figures in a unique way.
Also, I can only relate to black and white (I used only black and white from 2009 to 2018) and his artistic attitude / approach to using hands in the creative process.
What compelled you to follow the NFT industry?
The truth is that blockchain uses technology that will change the way we live our lives. As an artist that pioneered a new aesthetic and artistic approach, I see a great opportunity to share my work in the NFT industry with a wider audience and grow in the field.
What is an NFT that you want to buy but miss
Bored Apes
Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world? Why this location?
Cape Town. I’ve never been to South Africa (not even North Africa) and I want to experience the vibe and culture of that place.
What are your other passions besides art? Why?
I am a record collector, I love to cook, especially spaghetti and Cantonese rice.
Do you create other forms of art?
No, I focus my artistic research on only one type of practice.
Are you self-educated or trained?
Self-educated
How do you come up with your specific style?
For my first project in 2009, I first thought of using clicksography, where I created 4 inkblot artworks as a background to combine other types of photos for an art book. After 2 years, I realized that I should dig into this practice and I started my artistic research. I found this style inside me, and many years later I discovered that it has a name which is Clexography. So it came very spontaneously.
How has your style evolved over the years?
From 2009 to 2018, I used only white paint on black cardboard to create my pieces, and I shot the original painting to enhance the textures created in the image.
Once I was selected for a 4-month artistic residence in Berlin in 2019, the goal was to give my work a 3-dimensional effect, so I started experimenting with other materials like acrylic and gasso. From that moment on, shooting the original matrix became inevitable not only to enhance the texture detail, but also to immortalize the moment that the paint is still wet, making the work of art fresh forever. If you compare the photo of the painting with the original dry matrix, you can understand the difference in visual results at first glance. The paintings are wet and visually enhanced by digital photography.
Since 2020, I’ve started shooting dozens of macro photos of original paintings to put together in Photoshop. That way, I could get as high a resolution as possible to print the artwork or display it in a larger size, as it was always my goal: to make my works appear larger.
What is coming in the near future?
I recently won the OP71 competition, which ranked me 71st in the Decentral Art Pavilion in Venice, featuring names like Beeple, Jesse Draxler, Luna Ikuta, Skygolpe, Federico Clapis and many more.
From June 1-8 I showcased a piece of mine minted in Makersplace with Crypt Gallery at the Dream Hollywood Hotel in Los Angeles, revealing some names with Alan Bolton, Hanes Hummel.
I just sold my first 1/1 in World of V and, as a collector’s benefit, I’m creating a dedicated premature artwork that I will send to her World of V wallet.
I am promoting a 3 piece collection at Makersplace, which comes with a dedicated print.
During this time, I am always looking for new opportunities to show my NFT to new audiences.
Then I can start working on my second verified drop in World of V.
If you could collaborate with an artist, who would it be? (And why)
Dexamal, it would be amazing to create some 3d insects based on my premature artwork and he is a master at creating detailed 3d animation imho.
What was your biggest failure and what did you learn from it?
In 2018 I did not follow my insights to research the implementation of blockchain in the field of industry. I never learn to take anything for granted.
Do you have any upcoming drops?
I recently received my first verified drop at World of V, and I plan to do the second since the first one went pretty well. I am looking for a curated platform for 121 minutes of Premature, the part I exhibited at the Decentral Art Pavilion in Venice.
