Legendary artists create music that transcends generations, leaving an indelible impact on fans, the music world, and society as a whole. Christopher Wallace – aka Biggie Smalls or The Notorious BIG – is the epitome of that.

Biggie released his first demo tape and entered the hip-hop scene in the early 1990s. Just a few years later, he was a global sensation, captivating audiences around the world with his deep voice and catchy rhymes. Although his time on earth was sadly short, his music lives on and continues to serve as an inspiration to fans of all ages and walks of life.

Now, to pay tribute to Biggie’s genius, green NFT platform OneOf has teamed up with Christopher Wallace’s estate. The Sky’s the Limit: The Notorious BIG NFT Collection of the world. Mining on the Tezos blockchain, the collection features generative 3D NFTs inspired by Biggie’s life, style and lyrics. What’s more, NFT holders get rights to collectively license audio from one of his most famous freestyles.

Now in a conversation with nft, Wayne Barrow, Biggie’s former manager and estate representative, noted that the collection is important because it serves existing fans and because it can reach younger generations who aren’t familiar with Biggie’s work.

“At the end of the day, it’s about cultural relevance, so that young kids today can connect with Biggie and pass it on to the next generation,” he said. “It’s about making sure fans can connect with Biggie like never before by owning a piece of the work he’s created and getting a license to create their own work from it.”

Unique fan connection

Through this drop, OneOf and the Christopher Wallace Estate are creating many innovative ways for fans to connect with Biggie’s work.

For starters, OneOf was granted exclusive music licensing rights to Biggie’s “Fulton Street Freestyle.” Filmed on a Brooklyn street corner in 1997, this freestyle was never cleared for sampling or adaptation. By purchasing an infamous BIG NFT, holders automatically gain membership access to the new Sky’s the Limit Collective. Collective will decide together which artists, DJs and musicians can license audio from these classic freestyles for their own recordings and remixes. Once approved by the collective and Biggie’s estate, any work using Freestyle can be published across all music services with the credit “Featuring Notorious BIG” in the title.

And that’s not all.

All licensing, sales and streaming revenue from the use of Freestyle will flow to Sky’s The Limit Collective, which will be further used by holders for various projects.

In addition to the aforementioned licensing rights, the project will place a strong emphasis on bringing fans together – both virtually and physically – through gigs and events. This experience will be a first Brooke Metaverse, an immersive virtual experience designed to recreate the streets of ’90s Brooklyn that Biggie once roamed. All NFT holders will be given VIP status.

The live experience, which press materials say is “too crazy to talk about yet,” is a work in progress. And those lucky enough to secure an NFT from this initial collection will be automatically guaranteed access to two additional collaborations between OneOf and Biggie’s family over the next year.
