Johan Cruyff’s FC Barcelona NFT sold for $693000

Spanish club, FC Barcelona, sold the first of their 10-piece NFT collection at Sotheby’s in New York on Friday. The 40-second clip, in a way, commemorates the immortal, legendary Johan Cruyff, who was a player and coach at the club. The hammer last came down at $550,000. Sotheby’s fees raised the final sale price to $693,000.

The auction was held at Sotheby’s in New York and simultaneously in Times Square.

The first digital art piece depicts Cruyff’s memorable goal against another football club, Atlético Madrid, at the Nou Camp in December 1973. The flying acrobatic goal is one of Cruyff’s most iconic goals (of which there have been many).

The 40-second video shows an animated Cruyff covered in molten gold, flying through the air to meet the ball. Along with the main NFT or non-fungible token are four other NFTs, which are still images of animated clips.

According to a statement from the club, the graphics for NFT were created “in collaboration with BCN Visual, a strategic innovation partner and digital superstudio that developed NFT’s cinematographic aesthetic.”

The graphics for the entire collection took over 10,000 hours to complete, with Johan Cruyff NFT taking over 1000 hours to create.

What is the utility of the digital art piece depicting Cruyff?

Lucky NFT buyers are in for some huge utility with various VIP benefits. The first is that the owner becomes the club’s digital ambassador. Other utilities include pre-game meet and greets, seats in the VIP section, hospitality rights, access to training sessions, rights to play at the Spotify Camp Nou Stadium and official balls before friendly matches and more.

10 Barcelona NFT

The iconic Johan Cruyff goal is only the first digital art piece depicting the club’s history and heritage. The club plans to release 9 more in the coming months. NFTs are part of Barcelona’s strategy to embrace emerging technologies to educate and inspire millennial, xennial and generation Z supporters.

The legendary Johan Cruyff

Dutch legend Cruyff is considered by many to be one of football’s greatest players. He played for Barça from 1972 to 1978, winning the Ballon d’Or twice. He later returned to the club as coach in 1988. He won 4 league titles and Barcelona’s first ever European Cup as manager.

Other clubs and players are joining the NFT sphere

Barcelona is one of many clubs and players to release NFTs and enter the metaverse. Stars like Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have released NFTs. Kylian Mbappe invests in Sorare Fantasy Football Manager NFT game. Another notable one is Manchester City, who have partnered with Sony to create a replica of their stadium in the Metaverse.

Afterthought

FC Barcelona is arguably the most famous football club in the world, so we expected a lot of interest. But the news of the final sale price of $693,000 came as a surprise to many.

Johan Cruyff is the only one in a long list of football greats to play for the Catalan side, with Argentina’s Lionel Messi and Brazilians Ronaldinho and Ronaldo being more recent greats. It will be interesting to see who else is part of the NFT collection.

What are your thoughts? Who else do you think should be included in Barcelona’s digital collection?
