Recent data from DappRadar suggests that the Ethereum-based virtual world Decentraland may not have as many active users as its high valuation. How many users does Decentraland have?

While some people have been excited about the potential of Metaverse technology and thrilled to see so many large companies working on it, others have been far more skeptical of its potential for widespread adoption.

That’s why Decentraland’s user news made so much noise.

According to DaRadar’s metrics, Decentraland had only 38 active users in 24 hours. Things are looking better for other metaverses, but not by much. For example, Sandbox had 522 active users during the same period.

What does DappRadar data say?

How could it be? Decentraland and Sandbox are both large operations. Both are worth about $1.3 billion. So how is this number so low? Will this affect the metaverse’s chances of becoming mainstream?

To understand better, we need to look at the data.

Some argue that the metrics used to measure user activity in Decentraland are flawed. DappRadar defines an active user as the interaction of a wallet address with a decentralized smart contract.

To be considered an “Active User” by DappRadar, you must log into your Decentraland account, connect your wallet and make purchases with MANA. Basically, DappRadar doesn’t count people who log in and hang around the Metaverse or drop in for a short event.

For example, Decentraland hosted its first fashion week a few months ago. During the event, a wave of users visited the Metaverse but did not stay. So, technically, they wouldn’t be considered “active users” by DappRadar’s metrics.

Does Decentraland only have 38 users?

Data published by DappRadar data does not accurately represent Decentraland’s user base. We have established so far that there are two types of Decentraland users: those who connect to their crypto wallets and those who log in in “guest mode”.

The second group of users, guests, are not considered by DaRadar. So, how many people log into Decentraland?

We need to look at a few different metrics and websites. In this case:

  • DCL metrics show that the Decentraland website has about 8,500 unique visitors a day.
  • Metacat.world uses parcel data and shows that Decentraland may have 40,000 daily users.
  • New World Notes research indicates that Decentraland has 18,000 unique users, although this data may be out of date.

How did these misconceptions spread so quickly?

Let’s face it – most publications aren’t doing much research on Decentraland active users. Some like the title “clickbaity” and others don’t believe the metaverse is worth anyone’s time.

The truth is that although Decentraland’s user base is not as large as one would like, Metaverse is new and uncharted territory, and it will take time to reach mass adoption.

It can be frustrating to see misinformation spread so quickly, but it’s not surprising. The media loves to spread FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) on cryptocurrency-related topics.

It’s important to do your research and not believe everything you read online.
