EBay has just acquired a major NFT marketplace
eBay has made significant progress in the Web3 space since its first NFT sale on its site in March 2021. In May 2022, the e-commerce giant launched its own NFT collection. Today, June 22, the company announced that it has officially acquired KnownOrigin – an NFT marketplace that has generated over $ 7 million in trading volume since its launch in late 2018.
The news was broken via Marketplace’s official Twitter account, which announced this via multiple tweets at 8:41 AM EDT this morning.
The 1/7 mission was simple: Can we create a new platform that would empower creators and give digital artists the opportunity to make a living doing the work of their choice? pic.twitter.com/X5zCkJHj1B

To close the thread, Marketplace returns to its original creator-first sight, calling the acquisition “the beginning of a new chapter in the story of known origin.” Together, the two teams hope to “bring more producers and collectors into space” and look forward to the opportunity to “educate and inspire the next million manufacturers.”
eBay CEO Jamie Iannone believes – with this acquisition, the rest of its steps firmly position itself within the larger NFT landscape – true to the site’s core goals since the dot com bubble in the late 90’s when it was first introduced to the public. Speaking about the acquisition, Yanon said in a press release that “eBay is the first stop for people around the world who are looking for the perfect, hard to find or unique addition to their collection and through this acquisition we remain a leading site in adding digital collectibles to our community.” Gone. “
With this acquisition, eBay is showing great commitment to the strategy of integrating NFTs into its set of flagship services, despite the current beer market. In this case too, they are not alone. Gaming retailer Gamestop has its own NFT marketplace (complete with its own proprietary wallet) and Mark Zuckerberg recently shared the NFT roadmap for Facebook and Instagram.
