How this NFT project is helping a species to become ‘extinct’
Cheating. Does this word evoke an image in your mind? Is it a huge super conference? A really exclusive drop? Goblins? For wildlife photographer Tim Flach, this is the first time in 22 years that Spix’s Macau has flown in the wild.
On June 11, 2022, Spix’s Macaw became the first species to become “extinct”, where a flock of birds was released in the Brazilian state of Bahia. To celebrate the moment of waterlogging in animal conservation, Flash has partnered with Atlas Labs and the Association for the Conservation of Threatened Parrots (ACTP) to make their debut in a collection of Macau paintings by NFT Space: Project Uninterrupted.
An ongoing historical event
This is the first time in history that a recorded recovery of a species from extinction has been recorded in the wild.
Talking about the significance of this project in a press release, Flach explained, “It’s a once-in-a-lifetime event, an unprecedented manifestation of Spikes in the Macau Wilderness, from which it has been extinct for a generation! This umbrella species is inspiring the rejuvenation of its indigenous habitat and the biodiversity of the region. I am honored to be able to register and participate in this historic event. “
Since it may be a year-long process to fully reintroduce Spikes’ macaws into their natural habitat, Project Uninterrupted NFTs will provide all kinds of long-term benefits to holders. Most notably, it will include access to the unexpected NFT collector community, where members will receive bi-weekly updates on the status of the eight released Macau. Holders will be given priority access to participate in an event later this year where the second group of Spikes will be released into the wild.
NFTs for the environment
Although NFTs have been used in the past to help fund conservation efforts for endangered species, the project distinguishes itself by providing active participation to conservation efforts. For each NFT sale, the Unextinct team will plant a tree in Caatinga, help restore the Spix’s natural habitat and make the NFT space completely environmentally sustainable.
Unexpected teams don’t stop there – they promise to offset twice the amount of carbon produced by NFT sales through direct air capture. In addition, his team claims that the sale of Project Uninterrupted is a completely carbon-negative transaction.
Atlas Labs CEO Sam Dhesi hopes the event will not be the last of its kind in NFT space. “Extinction is a perfect example of a world-first effort that will set the stage for countless ‘extinct’ events in the near future. We are extremely proud to support the incredible team behind this global effort,” he said in a press release.
