Discord on Discord: The platform has seen NFT hacks increase by more than half in the last month

OKHotshot, an on-chain analyst, recently reported that from June 2 to July 2, 2022, 107 NFT Discord channels were under threat. OKHotshot announced July 3 via his Twitter accountrd.

According to the post, the compromised collection included huge players like BAYC, KnownOrigin, Lacoste, and Memeland (9gag), Boss Beauties and many more. The post further states that the collections were compromised through social engineering scams. In the last four weeks, NFTs hacked have increased by 50.7% over the previous month, from 71 Discord Attacks in May to 107 from June to July.

To expose the word about recent hacks, OkHotshot has asked users to “be careful”. OpenSea, the world’s largest NFT marketplace, has warned buyers and holders to beware of phishing attacks. The New York-based market has asked its consumers to be wary of emails and files sent from strangers after reporting a massive data breach.

OpenSea also revealed through its official blog post that 1.8 million users could be affected by this data breach, resulting in further phishing and other social engineering risks. OpenSea’s Discord Server was targeted by Cybertack to promote scam drops. Earlier this year, the company had to pay back 1.8 million for illegally sold NFT.

Sarah Bowman, creator of the recently hacked Women and Weapons NFT, has called on investors to be aware of their transactions in light of the recent scandal. “We (Women and Weapons NFT) do not offer amazing mints or gifts and will never ask you to connect your wallet for any reason,” he added.

As previously reported by NFT News Today, the popular Yuga Labs’ Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT collection announced that its Discord servers were the subject of a “brief exploitation” that resulted in the theft of NFT worth 200ETH from users.

As NFTs (non-fungible tokens) gain popularity, they have become a major target for scammers and hackers. Both the creators of NFTs and those who buy them carry the underlying risk of creating and purchasing these digitized assets. Scammers have several ways to get valuable NFT holders “to bite”.

Phishing is a great way to deceive people Phishing is done via email and is a trick to trick a user into clicking or downloading by pretending to be a trusted source. The practice has been around for some time and is not a crypto-only problem. Spear phishing is a more targeted form of this method because the attacker has a list of email addresses that they know have communicated with OpenSea.

Discord scams, as mentioned in this article, have increased due to the versatility of the platform and its huge number of targets. With so much data available, scammers can easily gain access to the channel by hacking or sending false messages to discord users.

Scammers can mimic the accounts of a social media influencer and post offensive or unattainable profits or gifts. They will send a direct message (DM) to the victim to create a relationship while isolating them from their assets.

To avoid phishing, verify the link and look for minor differences on the actual website. Don’t click on links posted by unknown users or organizations. Also, owners of legitimate projects usually do not send private messages to anyone without valid reasons. After all, with social media influencers, if the deal seems too good to be true, it certainly is.
