Bobby Bonilla’s Mets compensation contract NFT sold for $180,000

The contract that keeps paying, Bobby Bonilla, ex MLB The All-Star, who is currently receiving a bumper compensation deal from his former team the New York Mets, earned even more cash by turning the physical contract into an NFT. The auction took place on August 6th via NFT marketplace Goldin, with the winning bid reaching a valuation of $180,000.

Apart from receiving the infamous contract and its Accompanying 1/1 Bobby Bonilla NFT, The single winner will also get a 30-minute Zoom call with the man himself, as well as Dennis Gilbert, the agent who made the surprise deal. They will receive a signed baseball from Bonilla’s personal collection, a game-used bat and a day trip to New York where they will attend batting practice, attend a Mets game and dine with Bonilla.

For context, the contract in focus here is the commitment to pay the Mets Bonilla $1.19 million per year from 2011 to 2035 (a total of $29.8 million), as opposed to paying him the $5.9 million owed to them. Annual payments are always made on 1st July, leading to the latter The baseball community is dubbing the date ‘Bobby Bonilla Day’.

With these monumental figures already in play, it can be assumed that the revenue generated from NFT is not going to significantly change Bonilla’s life, so it will be interesting to see what the former All-Star decides to do with the money.
