Kevin Rose announces new NFT collection and $50 million proof collection

Alpha:

  • Proof — best known as the brainchild of Kevin Rose and the force behind Moonbirds and Oddities — just wrapped up ‘Future Proof,’ a live-stream community event with a focus on what’s next for the brand’s ecosystem.
  • Rose and his team shared what Deck has in store for the next few months of 2022, including support for its CC0 collection.Updates on the upcoming Moonbirds DAO, and Proof’s third NFT collection: Moonbirds Mythics.
  • The stream was headlined by an announcement of the collective’s expansion — fueled by an additional $50 million in funding — and preliminary plans for Proof’s own token. Kick? It will be fully powered by the utility.

Why it matters:

Undoubtedly, Proof and Proof Collective (a subsidiary of the larger Proof brand) are the two big names currently active in the NFT space. Beyond their success with Moonbirds, PROOF has successfully managed other successful projects such as Grail and Emotes.

Additionally, collective members have taken on the lofty goal of being stewards of the NFT space as a whole through the curation process. “In the stock world, there are professional firms that do nothing but collect data and produce really in-depth research reports,” noted co-founder Kevin Rose on an April episode of the nft now podcast. We want this to be the case for NFT.”

But there could be two big obstacles in the way of all this: bear markets and bad actors in the space. A May 2022 Phishing Attack A member of the PROOF Collective lost an estimated $1.5 million in NFTs after mistakenly clicking on a link.

As such, Rose, Proof Collective co-founder Justin Meizel, and director of product Harry Thomas took to the hour-long live stream to assuage some of those concerns. To maintain its momentum, Proof successfully raised $50 million in funding led by a16z.

“It’s great to receive this vote of confidence in Web3 from some of the most respected investors, as well as capital to continue delivering great products and services as we mature this business over the long term,” Rose said during the live stream.

What’s next:

CC0 used the proof stream to further comment on Moonbirds and Oddities’ recent migration to the collection. “Freeing up IP” identified in press releases can lead to new creative endeavors and attract more attention, the report says. [NFT projects over time]” But what does this mean for Moonbirds, which currently stands as one of the best-selling NFT collections of all time?

That’s where the founding of Moonbirds DAO came in. The DAO is set to take on the responsibility of “granting trademark rights and investing in projects that advance the Moonbirds mission,” according to the press release. Said capital will receive initial funding from Proof in addition to ongoing funding from royalties generated by OG collections.

As a demonstration of its commitment to its highest-profile collections, Rose and co. The stream also took time to announce the follow-up to Moonbirds: Moonbirds Mythics. The new collection will drop sometime in early 2023 and will be a 20,000-piece PFP collection “with an eye toward giving back to original Moonbird and Oddity collectors.”

Future Proof lives up to its name with another visionary development: Moonbirds will be one of the first fully on-chain high-end NFT collections. With this move, the artwork of each Moonbirds NFT will be fully embedded in its smart contract. By moving away from off-chain storage, evidence expects that “[make] Moonbird is accessible for generations to come.”
