Watch: Bhag Danga Founder Shares How NFTs Can Power Activism

In February 2012, Nadia Toloknikova and the rest of the Russian feminist performance and protest group Pussy Riot made global headlines after a guerrilla performance at the Church of Christ the Savior in Moscow. Anti-Putin protests led to the group’s immediate arrest and eventual detention in Russia’s harsh prison system.

After her release in late 2013, Tolokonnikova continued her activism, protesting against injustice and rallying for social change. In recent years, he and the rest of Pusey Riot have come to see the fundraising and organizational potential of decentralized platforms, fully embracing the NFT ecosystem as a new channel in the process. Most notably, she helped found UnicornDAO, which is actively working to advance women’s rights and members of the LGBTQ+ community.

In the past year, Toloknikova has raised millions of dollars through her contributions to the Crypto Boy fundraiser through the creation of UkraineDAO, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and more. We sat down with him for an exclusive interview on his story so far, where he reflected on his various supports; Namely, women’s rights, prison reform, and the overall “lack of radical imagination” present in our society.

Toloknikova cites one of the biggest problems persisting in the NFT space: an overall lack of diversity. This is one of UnicornDAO’s most prominent areas of focus, as DAO has amassed an impressive collection showcasing works from women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and non-binary artists. “Our goal is to change the statistics. Five to seven percent of global NFT sales are made by female artists—and that’s certainly not enough […] NFT is a life-changing technology, [so it] It has to be accessible to people who are first and foremost already systematically abused,” she said.
