Xbox head, Phil Spencer, is bullish on the Metaverse
Microsoft’s head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, is bullish on the overall metaverse space and play-to-earn games, yet cautious (due to economic and speculative aspects). Interestingly, he suggests that gamers have been delving into the Metaverse world for 30 years.
Xbox head’s thoughts
Speaking with Bloomberg’s Emily Chang, Phil Spencer revealed his thoughts on the Metaverse and play-to-earn games. He said: “My view of the Metaverse is that gamers have been in the Metaverse for 30 years. When you’re playing games, if you’re playing a World of Warcraft game, you’re playing Roblox, you’re playing a racing game where everyone is in a shared world.”
He noted that commercial opportunities in the metaverse space are piqued the interest of himself, Microsoft and company CEO Satya Nadella.
Speaking specifically about P2E games, he said: “Play-to-earn in particular is something I’m wary of. It creates a workforce of players, to monetize certain players. He added: “I think sometimes it’s a hammer looking for a nail when it comes to this technology. But with actual human use – or player use, in our case – of these technologies, I think there could be some interesting things.”
This time his thoughts are more positive than the last time he talked about it. In November last year, he was billed as an ‘NFT naysayer’.
About Phil Spencer
Phil Spencer is an American business executive and CEO of Microsoft Gaming, making him the current head of the Xbox brand. He joined Microsoft as an intern in 1988 and served in a variety of roles, leading the development of Microsoft’s first CD-ROM-based titles and, for example, as development manager for Microsoft Money.
During his early days at Microsoft, his colleagues knew him as an avid gamer, as he often played video games while at the office.
With the launch of Xbox in 2001, Spencer joined the Xbox team and served as General Manager of Microsoft Game Studios EMEA. Then, in 2008 he became general manager of Microsoft Studios and a year later corporate vice president. He then began leading Xbox-related teams in 2014, from which he has held various roles.
Xbox NFTs
Xbox has yet to officially enter the NFT world, alongside their parent company Microsoft, who “ended” Minecraft’s NFT games in July of this year. However, an unofficial art NFT was created by @pabloandrespozo, a digital artist. You can see crazy pieces of zoomed-out art on his Instagram.
