Ethereum Name Service (ENS) sues GoDaddy for selling eth.link

True Names Ltd, the parent company of the popular web3 Ethereum Name Service (ENS), is suing GoDaddy and others for selling the eth.link domain. The suit, filed last week in Arizona, US, aims to cease and desist the sale of eth.link to Defy company Manifold Finance who bought the name on September 4 for $851,919. Now, ENS and its previous owner, Virgil Griffith, are suing GoDaddy, the new owner, Manifold Finance, and the auctioneer, Dynadot.

ENS is suing GoDaddy and others!

The announcement of a lawsuit in Arizona confirms that ENS and Virgil Griffith are serious about getting the eth.link domain back. However, it is much more complicated than it seems. GoDaddy could argue that the domain name had expired, and when that happened, it should automatically go back on sale through the registration pool on September 5th.

Notably, on August 25th, GoDaddy released a statement confirming that the eth.link domain expires on September 5th. Notably, there are claims that GoDaddy transferred eth.link to another registry, Dynadot LLC, which put eth.link up for auction.

What’s Next in the GoDaddy ENS Domain Saga?

On September 4, Manifold Finance (@foldfinance) tweeted, “http://eth.link snipped by us. Services will be restored once ownership transfer is complete.”

Nick.eth, the lead developer at ENS, responded with shock at the announcement, “Where? It’s not actually expired yet; you bid on a drop-catching site? Want to send me a DM?”

It’s unclear what will happen in the weeks that continue between ENS and GoDaddy after the lawsuit is announced. As it stands, Manifold Finance is the new owner of the eth.link domain. It will be subject to the Arizona legal system for validating the sale.

Eth.link now offers a service status message and links to Manifold Finance

Why is the name eth.link so important?

The eth.link domain is an integral part of the eth.domain name ecosystem. Programmer Virgil Griffith created it for use as a ‘revolving service’ for .eth domain names. Essentially, it serves as a link (hence the name) to the Web2 Domain Name System (DNS), the ENS domain name.

Today, when you use eth.link, you will receive a message about the current service status and links to Manifold Finance’s website.

In the coming weeks, we’ll see how and if the situation between ENS and GoDaddy changes.
