Pace Verso Announces Large-Scale Activation in NYC with Grimes | NFT Culture | Web3 Culture NFTs and Crypto Art | Platforms and projects
Titled Matter Is Void, TeamLab’s first NFT examines the concepts of ownership and authorship through an innovative new format that allows collectors to alter the content of works.
Musician Grimes will activate the artwork as part of a large-scale, public presentation on screens in New York’s Times Square.
Grimes will join an AMA discussion on Pace’s Twitter space on Friday, October 14 at 5pm EDT.
New York, NY – Pace Verso, Pace Gallery’s web3 hub, presents Matter Is Void, the first NFT by interdisciplinary art collective TeamLab. The project, which will be released Oct. 19 on Pace Verso’s platform, consists of seven unique NFTs bearing the words “Matter is Void,” a reference to the Japanese-Buddhist expression shikisoku zekuu, which meditates on the meaning of emptiness.
To explore notions of authorship and ownership, TeamLab adopted a radical format for Matter is Void that enables NFT buyers to alter the words displayed in the work through a website TeamLab created. Once the NFT’s content has been changed by their buyers, the artworks will never again display their original “matter is void” status.
Although only seven subject void NFTs will be available for purchase, ownership of the artwork is not exclusive to NFT buyers. The artwork will be available to download, own and display at any time for individuals around the world All these downloaded works will reflect the real-time changes of buying collectors in the words displayed on the NFT. Although NFT grants collectors the right to change the text, all works downloaded by NFT buyers as well as all works downloaded by non-NFT owners are equally authentic.
Along with the launch of this online platform, Matter is Void will be the subject of a public presentation in New York’s Times Square. 12 October at 12 a.m. EDT. The initial “Matter is Void” text on one of the NFTs will change to a new phrase coined by musician and songwriter Grimes, known for his role in shaping contemporary culture. Grimes’ activation of Matter Is Void will debut on the big screen in Times Square 13 October at 12 pm EDT and stay tuned 18 October. The presentation in New York is realized in partnership with Artis, the leading global online art marketplace and is sponsored by Outfront Media. The broad reach of this event will give people an opportunity to reflect on TeamLab’s interest in continuity and human connection.
Seven NFTs—six in their original “Matter is Void” format and one activated by Grimes—are available for purchase on Pace Verso, accessible Starting from October 19. Grimes will participate in an AMA discussion on Pace’s Twitter space on Friday, October 14 at 5pm EDT.
Matter Is Void will also be presented at Pace’s booth during the inaugural edition of Paris+ Par Art Basel, open to the public from October 20 to 23.
On a formal level, the project reflects TeamLab’s long-standing investigation of spatial calligraphy, or calligraphy painted in space. With many of its digital works, TeamLab has explored ways in which calligraphic forms can change shape across two- and three-dimensional space. In Matter is Void, brushstrokes appear on the screen, constantly floating and rotating in space. These brushstrokes alternately combine to form “matter is void” or a different phrase chosen by the NFT buyer. These fleeting moments of lucidity are interrupted as brushstrokes once again take on abstract choreographies. Each theme has a different color variation of the void artwork: black white, black black, white white, golden light, fire, water and fog.
This new NFT project also reflects collective explorations of the relationship between the individual and the external world. As such, these artworks bring to the fore questions of being and transience.
The release of Matter is Void will coincide with the launch of Pace Verso’s new, Ethereum-backed sales platform built by Mojito. Offering custodial wallets and payments via crypto, credit card or wire transfer, this platform update will serve Pace Verso’s efforts to make buying NFTs as easy as possible.
