Was Ryder Rips threatened by Guy Ossery? Exclusive Interview – The Defiant

Two weeks ago we released a film about the lawsuit filed by Yuga Labs against artist Ryder Rips and others. Alleged neo-Nazi themes have fired a subsection of the NFT community for coming together in the name of morality, ethics and free speech based on the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection. All of which came together behind the RR BAYC collection to make it the number one project at OpenSea in a nutshell. There was definitely a voice missing from that film.

Rider Reps. Well, we finally got to talk earlier this week and hash it out. This is a slightly truncated edit of that interview but I thought it was important to put what he was trying to say in the context of his other work with RR BAYC, going back to the beginning, Internet Archaeology, Art Hore, DumpFM but certainly more recently. There are many who told me I shouldn’t be having this conversation, that he’s a scammer and a troll, guilty of trashing some innocent people’s reputation in the service of profiting from his own copycat collection.

All of which may or may not be true. Just like BAYC could be a neo-nazi troll. Or it might not. Which is the incredibly frustrating part of all of this. Ryder’s homebase is meta-irony – that mode on 4chan where everything is claimed to be a joke but it’s impossible to tell if it’s ironic or sincere. Or maybe, you’ll find, it’s not that hard. People being people and all. However, while others preferred to throw shade from a distance I thought it was better to actually just have a conversation.

I tried to remain neutral and let the piece speak for itself. But as you will see. I failed. And more disappointingly I came out of it with more questions, especially around a certain Mr Guy O’Seery.
