Bigger than Middle Earth? An inside look at the Cult of Forgotten Runes Wizards

In the world of traditional media, IPs often have to wait to get a big-budget adaptation before mainstream audiences embrace them. For example, by George RR Martin A game of thrones An adaptation took 15 years to catch on — and was devoured by audiences across a wide swath of the population.

However, with new approaches in the spirit of Web 3 possible, Cult of Forgotten Runes Wizards hopes to turn that meta on its head. “We’re fast-tracking the next big fantasy franchise,” Forgotten Runes co-creator says Datta Now in an interview with nft. how big “Bigger than Middle Earth, Westeros, and Hogwarts combined,” they boldly declare on their About page.

Instead of waiting for a major studio to bring the world they created to a wider audience, the team took matters into their own hands. After the initial launch of its NFTs in June 2021, Forgotten Runes has expanded at a phenomenal pace — and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Comic books, TV series, even a full-fledged blockchain game combined with World of Warcraft Stardew Valley – all built on top of a collection of NFTs that started out as pixelated wizards.

Let’s see where magic began, the ever-evolving lore, and what’s next for the Runeverse.

The wizard that started it all

The Forgotten Runes Wizards Cult began as an NFT collection containing over 9,000 pixelated wizards in all manner of costumes and appearances. But don’t let their pixelated design fool you — each wizard is completely different from the other, thanks in large part to the hundreds of unique heads each wizard can come with.

But these wizards are not intended to be used as normal PFP NFTs — each one gives its holder full rights to extract it as they see fit. “What’s new [about Forgotten Runes] It’s our containers that help create characters,” says Dotta. “You create your character, you own that character, you own the commercial rights to that character.”

While it may not sound out of the ordinary now, Forgotten Runes has launched with the intention of shaking things up in the new NFT space. “To me, it seemed [other creators] Just doing another crypto token that has a picture that says, “Co-creator of Forgotten Runes the elf Explained thus, the team ventured to create an NFT collection that pays due respect to the characters depicted within. “All our tokens have a unique name, each project has a serial number. Our wizards have names. We are the first to do this because we want to emphasize the character,” elaborated Dota.

Playing with science

The Forgotten Runes’ holders took that feeling and ran with it as much as they could. One of the greatest testaments to the creativity of the Forgotten Runes community is its Book of Lore, a codex for every wizard from the initial collection that is fully editable by its respective holder.

Of course, in theory, something goes for the holders in terms of knowledge, the Forgotten Runes team lays some helpful foundations; It all starts with how the Forgotten Runes’ Runiverse is separated from reality. For one, in this world, magic exists. For technology? “This is not your typical medieval wizarding world. It’s a world that’s as technologically diverse as our current world,” says Elf.

While a continuity decentralizing Forgotten Runes’ world-building to this extent may sound like a nightmare, Elf believes the franchise can still tell a cohesive story at the end of the day, citing continuity issues that long-running franchises historically have not. A hitch “If you want to see other IPs throughout history batman, ninja turtlesor James Bondeven […] All of them have almost no consistency,” Elf said. Yet, they still have an incredibly dedicated following.

Taking this point further, the elf even mentions that the holders of the story are telling them to the wizards to do share a continuum, though not in the conventional sense. According to Elf, the holders are all modeling their respective lore around monologues—some without even realizing it. “You’d be surprised how often people write about the same thing thousands of miles apart without ever contacting each other”.

The elf had nothing but good things to say about the sheer creativity displayed by the Cult of Forgotten Runes Wizards — even though, in a sense, the founding team led by example from the start. “In our religion, magic is the act of creation when you create art,” Elf said. “When you make music, when you write a story, you get caught up in the magic, you know? This can also be applied to coders. Dotta is a magician. He literally spells out smart contracts. Even Bear Snake — our third partner — is a wizard who opens doors. He can literally open any door in Hollywood,” he said. That last bit is critical because it’s what enabled Forgotten Runes to gain some serious momentum to make its planned TV series possible.

One of those unfortunate doors bear snake A call opened with Derek Kolstad — best known as the creator of Keanu Reeves’ lead. John Wick With franchise Kolstad agreeing to direct the upcoming Runiverse-inspired series, the Forgotten Runes team enlisted animation studio Titmouse to bring the planned series to life.

This planned series – along with its currently ongoing comic book – hopes to provide a larger bedrock upon which members of the Forgotten Runes Wizards cult can base their storytelling. Doing so will unlock what looks to be one of the most exciting utilities for any die-hard fantasy and fiction fan of Forgotten Runes – the chance to effectively create canon fanfiction.

Real world engagement

“You need JK Rowling to write harry potter before you can get harry potter Fanfiction,” says Dutta. “And so, how do we get the stories out of our world as quickly as possible? We think one of the best ways to do that is to have a TV show that’s, you know, written by professional storytellers. [But] In the meantime, we are [also] Trying to tell more bite-sized stories from our own company [in the form of comic books]”

Although Dota describes Forgotten Runes in its comic book bite-sized form, whatever the intent behind its release is. but. This, and all of Forgotten Runes’ other media initiatives, are intended to drive more people into the core community.

“We printed about 200,000 copies. As far as NFT projects go, other products have done comics, but to my knowledge, no one has actually printed a comic, let alone 200,000 copies, and that’s pretty boring. NFT people want to turn everything into NFT,” said Dutta. “Why would you make an entire comic book and then token-gate it to your holders and make it some very rare collector’s item? When you hold a physical copy of this comic book, and you flip through it, [you] can leave it [your] office, and [your] Kids can pick it up and read it,” he said.

“My kids won’t log into my Metamask and read my Cool Cats token-gated comic. It’s absolutely critical to run a franchise fast because the whole point is to get out of a niche crypto community,” he said. And so, how has progress been? Based on last June’s Enter The Runiverse event held at NFT NYC 2022, pretty good. Collection Held a year after the initial launch, the Enter The Runiverse event opened in NYC to a (surprisingly) full-costume hedonistic crowd.

“We’re all like creating something new together. And we all love the idea that we’re building the next one lord of the rings or harry pottr, but instead it’s all owned by one person, this community. It’s part of this larger art that we’re all creating, and we’re all drawing together through that common mission,” Elf said.

Here’s hoping for this speedrun. Move over Middle Earth – the Runeverse may be coming for you.
