Whitney Stewart Landwehrman NFT Artist Interview | NFT Culture | Web3 Culture NFTs and Crypto Art | Platforms and projects

where are you from (Provide a little bit of your background, have you moved etc.)

I have lived in the remote Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina my entire life.

Can you tell us about your background and what led you to become an artist and eventually experiment with NFTs?

Having lived my entire life in the mountains, I have not often experienced art and artists from different backgrounds. Web3 completely changed that for me, that geographical barriers (among other barriers) didn’t exist and I got inspiration from artists all over the world. Due to the relative “niche-ness” of NFTs, this is possible.

When did you mint your first NFT? Which platform did you choose and why?

Feb 4, 2022- I chose Opensea at the time, but have since dabbled with Objects and I’m interested in minting Manifold’s new marketplace.

Can you tell us one thing you can’t live without? (and why)

My daughter. I had always wanted to be a mother, I had recently gotten over the complications of alcoholism and my dream was to have a daughter that I could give the life I wanted so badly as a child. I tried to get pregnant for 7 years, and assumed I was unable, so I poured that love into my art, murals, and then finally was able to realize another dream to open a gallery. The day I got in, I found out I was pregnant, the single happiest day of my life—and I couldn’t wait to share my art and journey with her as an active and current parent.

Who is your favorite artist(s) (NFT)? What about their style resonates with you?

I have always been the biggest MC Escher fan for as long as I can remember. I love how calculated and deliberate his works are, and his art introduced me to the surrealism that I embody in my work today.

Who is your favorite NFT artist? What makes this artist unique?

Hands down Jake Fried. Stop motion (if that’s even called that) scanning after finishing each drawing and compiling it into a cute story (gif) that loops – but honestly his work is so extensive that half the time I’m not even aware of the beginning. The end.

What made you pursue the NFT industry?

I found a real connection with other artists and collectors that isn’t really present in the traditional art world (that I’m familiar with). Not to mention, a collection DAO funded a real dream of mine to paint a mural in a different state. The mural I completed in Jersey City for Cryptoskullz really wouldn’t have happened without the connections I made in the community. I follow NFT art because it makes me feel truly connected to my holders and vice versa for other NFTs I hold.

What is an NFT you want to buy but miss out on?

Claire Silver always gives me FOMO.

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go? Why this position?

Australia. Before my grandmother unexpectedly passed away, this was her last trip and she beautifully and meticulously documented where she ate/lived/did and I would love to recreate this adventure.

What are your other passions besides art? Why?

I have a BS in Chemistry and a concentration in Fermentation Science, I am an avid brewer, wine maker, and dabble in artisan distilled spirits with copper that I made with my dad. I absolutely love skiing, rock climbing, and volunteering for the committees I chair.

Do you create other forms of art?

I do street art/murals, canvas art, digital art, epoxy art and interior design.

Are you self-taught or trained?

self taught

How do you come up with your specific style?

Because I am a surrealist artist, I like combining two or more subjects on one canvas. It’s always driven my art in the direction it’s headed.

How has your style evolved over the years?

Oh goodness, I’ve been drawing since I was in 1st grade so it’s evolved quite a bit. I only started doing commissions for years before I could afford to do my own art, so it’s not only evolved, but I would imagine changed drastically over the course of my life.

What is coming in the near future?

Due to the interest in my CryptoSculz mural (which was the 1st NFT native AR mural), I am now interested in projects (Doodles, Mibits, LoserClub) and we are submitting proposals to their DAO and community to create the mural before Art Basel. .

If you could collaborate with one artist, who would it be? (and why)

It is very difficult. If it was someone famous I think I would have a panic attack and it would hinder my ability to create a quality piece but kidding aside, I would say Shepard Fairey. I’ve always seen him as a street artist, and I think our styles would be great together.

What was your biggest failure and what did you learn from it?

My biggest failure was not believing in myself. I will give up my art because I don’t think it’s worth it. I learned that I am my own biggest cheerleader and if I don’t believe in myself- who will?

What is your biggest selling piece?

Canvas or my mural “Trees of Appalachia”

How much was sold for?

Canvas: $8,400 Mural: $11,600

Do you have any upcoming drops?

I do! There should be a piece this week that I’m collaborating with Rust on and then I have a new collection I’m working on for OpenSea that should be available in December.
