How the world of women is bringing diversity and representation to the NFT
NFTs are taking the world by storm, as we have repeatedly said. But some projects – especially those at the beginning of the scene – have led, strengthening their position as leaders in space.
World of Women (WoW), a first-of-its-kind collection of 10,000 works of art by diverse and powerful women, is one such project.Yam Karkai is an incredibly talented founder and artist behind this collection. With the launch of the World of Women galaxy in March 2022, she expanded the concept of “a new dimension” – from the first collection to 22,222 Wow, who “traveled through a portal to join the galaxy,” changing and multiplying.
As one of the major women-led projects in space, the work that Karkai is doing is important to bring women into the Web3 community, as well as to diversify space and move it forward. This representation is important. Fans from all over the world have found themselves in his works, including Reese Witherspoon, Thalia, Eva Mendez and countless others.
We were able to sit down with Karkai to talk about the world of the female universe and beyond.
Tell us a little about your background.
Before launching World of Women, I was already in the NFT and Web3 space, creating 1: 1 NFT art. From the beginning, I have always focused on creating colorful, vibrant pieces that celebrate women and diversity. I always enjoy drawing the most (and really the only thing I draw).
How did you decide to go to Web3?
This is the first time I’ve heard of NFT randomly! It was through a job interview my partner Raph had. I had no idea what it was and I was immediately interested to find out. So I started digging deeper into the NFT [and Web3] Twitter and soak up all the information I could find. I was so excited to find a new and unique opportunity for artists to showcase their work, promote themselves and actually pay for their craft!
Do you think the World of Women will generate?
I knew I wasn’t the only one feeling and seeing that women and minorities were under-represented in this place, so I was hopeful that it would attract people like me and people who share the same thoughts and values.
With the co-founding team, we already had a lot of ambition from the start, but we never expected it to grow so fast and turn into such a large collection and company. Even though you dream it and you hope for it, there is always a part of you that tones it. It has been an incredible journey to witness the growth of the women’s world. Very excited to continue construction.
You have achieved a lot in space and there are a lot of celebrity holders What kind of interest and support has it been like?
Tragic, touching, and incredible! The women I looked up to, or grew up watching on screen to buy my art… I still have to pinch myself from time to time to realize that this is really happening.
Has anyone reacted negatively to the project? Any critic?
No matter what you do, when you gain visibility, you get hateful. We’re lucky to have an incredibly kind community, so we don’t find many critics, but from time to time they remind us that they exist. Although we have nothing big to mention.

Tell us a little about the inspiration for the art and how you came up with the features and lore.
As I said before, I have always enjoyed creating colorful pieces centered around women. I always knew I wanted to make a difference.
Looking at the under-representation in NFT Space and Web 3 and how this super new industry is already mimicking inequality and the same problems we face in the world, made it clear to me that a collection of strong and diverse women had an impact to go on. And it seems!
Do you expect people to stay away from your work?
I hope that the World of Women will continue to bring more diversity into space, make minorities, women and non-binary people feel comfortable and welcome and keep the spotlight on and bring forward more incredible artists and creators from this space.
What has been one of your favorite things about being involved with the project?
I want people to feel connected to it, to see themselves (or loved ones) and to see the values they stand for. I try to tell a story, show and celebrate something that is important to me or that I love and cherish. I hope people can feel it. I want my work to be important and continue to make a difference.
How do you plan to continue the evolution of the Wow universe, any exciting secrets you can reveal?
Oops, there’s a lot …
Making a change through the diverse industries and charities that we have been able to support and partner with was incredible. Being able to help and testify on a scale that is improving and changing lives around the world is an indescribable feeling. Giving visibility and spotlight to many amazing artists was great, meeting members of our community, meeting people I admire for a long time, working with a great team of fun and talented members and I can keep going!
