Ellipse Calculates NFT Scam Losses for Last 12 Months at $100m – NFT Plazas

Over the past 12 months, the high volume of scams across the NFT sector has proven difficult to ignore. Now, blockchain analytics firm, EllipticalCalculated the actual amount of cumulative damage for a massive, Dr. Evil’s frenzy, $100 million.

During his research, Ellipsis took stock of all reported NFT crimes July 2021 and July 2022. This means, the $100m figure does not represent the full extent of the total loss. Due to the many unreported NFT thefts that exist outside the scope of investigations.

In their report, Elliptic concluded that this cybercrime netted criminals an average of $300k per event. With the biggest single crime, meet 16 blue chip NFTs worth $2.1m Hijacked in December 2021 When the most expensive NFT was stolen evil thieves kidnapped CryptoPunk #4324 and made off with $490k.

Additionally, on a rather alarming note, July 2022 saw the highest number of NFT thefts. Recording an appalling 4,600 assets taken without the consent of their owners. Therefore, crypto scams of this ilk point to being on the rise.

Other notable findings show that $43 million worth of Bored Ape NFTs were stolen throughout the year. Although social media compromises represent the most common means of infiltrating a collector’s account.
