Bill Murray charity NFT project exploited for about $175k
Unfortunately, as has become more common in the NFT space, Bill Murray’s wallet was used by a hacker after his recent charity auction for around $175,000, just over 112 ETH. In detail, they completed the hack in several different transactions.
The Six Figure Stealing
Yesterday 2nd September, @NFTHerder A Twitter thread has detailed reports that a hacker has stolen about $175,000 worth of ETH since Hollywood actor Bill Murray’s charity NFT auction titled ‘Bill Murray 1000’.
The hack actually happened on Thursday, when hackers drained 94% of Murray’s wallet funds at around 7 PM ET, according to Etherscan, and details released by the actor’s team. In addition, there was also an attempt to steal some NFTs owned by Murray personally.
Thankfully, a wallet security team saved him from the worst. They did this by moving his prized NFTs, which included Damien Hirst, Cryptopunks, Pazzi Penguins, Cool Cats and Flower Girls, into a pair of safehouse wallets, drastically reducing the chances of further heists. Also, they tried to steal 800 NFTs from his launched collection.
The actor’s team has already filed a police report and is working with crypto analytics firm Chainalysis to identify the hacker and bring them to justice.
According to CoinDesk, in response to the hack, the auction runner-up, Mishap72, donated 120 ETH to Chive Charities’ Coinbase to replace what was lost.
